I keep seeing remarkably stupid and slanderous claims pop up, so here's Scott actually elucidating his reasoning for why "eugenics" is an incredibly loaded term that covers both uncontroversially terrible and uncontroversially ethical things.

Your example is explicitly not considered eugenics. It is a specific movement aimed around top-down gvt policies to encourage and discourage different pairings. Genetic engineering isn’t even eugenics.

Pretty sure this isn't true. Lots of people use the term eugenics to mean any sort of gene selection, even if it's not pressure from the government.
