So when people refer to "energy" in a non-scientific context do they really just mean "attention"?

No, when referencing an individual, it's Vision+Will_to_Power
When referring to a group, it's about the metabolism of the N^2 connections between everyone.

Depending on context, it's either:
"attention" (stage actors use it this way, for example)
"nonverbal cues" (i.e. the feeling you get when subconsciously reading people's microexpressions and body language), or
"vitality" (the sense of personal power one has when being agentic)

closer to “motivation” but also something weirder involving nervous system activation

it's hard to explain. it feels primitive, like a sixth sense. i can just sense when people or situations seem "off" or "sketchy" or "bad."
for me, it's tied to how sensitive you are or how strong your intuition is. it's not tangible, it's more like a "gut feeling."

Nope. There are very specific feelings/experiences, that people have and interact with, that the best word to describe it is energy.
Though that feeling might be abstracted attention.

I use it when I have unfounded beliefs about an individual that I don't want to out right specify since I know it might not be based on anything real.

I think it is really psychic energy--metaphysical-- but that is not scientific so a million different explanations are given so as not to embarrass oneself to our atheist culture
