Seems to be used a lot in US but not so much in UK, it can cause massive offence so just use another word.

No such thing as "bad" word its all about context, tone and company. There are times when any word is appropriate but not all words are appropriate at all times

I am autistic with multiple overlapping mental health issues. I recognize the word had a technical meaning, which shifted to a colloquial meaning and insult. I don't consider the word offensive, any more than I find referring to something disparagingly as autistic offensive. 🤷🏼♂️

Ok. Unless used in a clear and deliberately hostile context to someone with an intellectual disability, there’s no real harm to it. Same with most insults.
