so are there any laws around conducting research that i, a lonely peasant not affiliated with any institutions, am required to follow?

The ethics checklist is attached to laws, I know there are laws for people with disability under the global human rights act, I think the cautions your take there are extended to all participants such as right to information, signing consent forms and privacy of their data

Pretty sure these are professional standards rather than laws. So if you don’t belong to the relevant profession I can’t see how they’d apply.

The same privacy laws that apply to any activity also apply to research. That said, I am not aware of any specific privacy regulations for research purposes on top of those that always apply. At least not in any jurisdictions that I have experience with (EU).
