Since you do research on human subjects, you should obtain oversight from an Institutional Review Board. They represent the interests of the subjects without conflict from the results of the study. As an independent investigator, look at:

I think there are laws that govern research on human subjects. there are definitely ethical codes that academics and professionals follow. IANAL & not an expert, but from what I dimly recall of my undergrad research methods class, the most important thing is informed consent.
