Not quite. The French King ordered a massacre of the Templars in France as he perceived them as a threat to his authority. He also trousered their money. That day was Friday October 13th 1307. Hence the perception of Fri 13th being unlucky.

It's extremely famous in France, where it was a big deal when it happened. On the other hand, I only have the faintest acquaintance with Heaven's Gate, so I think it's mostly a matter of where you live.
