Apparently in all of the BLM protests, which were both peaceful and sometimes very violent (including storming at least one government building), only one unarmed person was shot to death by police.

This. The net is saying that it was senators or the Veep behind those doors. The US Secret Service don’t play LARP games. There’s no way to know if someone is armed or not until after the fact. When given a lawful order to stop, you stop.

Mace seems preferable, yes. Circumstances of these cases vary widely though. This was quite exceptional. Calling it cherry picking seems unfair.

From what I can tell, the “guys in suits with handguns” police were a kind of last line of defense, guarding the passage to where the congresspeople were sheltering. That would mean they have different rules of engagement, and also not outfitted for crowd control.
