Sorry twitter only gives me so many characters I know this but from an outside perspective that’s how it looks Or just like a “wild and crazy lifestyle” From a Conventional conservative POV

Sure from an outside perspective, but I'm here from an experienced inside perspective to tell you that's not what's going on and that is a harmful misconception/stereotype. Country music is not about polyamory. I don't think I've ever heard any song that supports my lifestyle.

Aella you’re missing my point I agree with you about it being a stigmatized class Comparing it to being gay implies a more significant level of social censure and stigma than it appears to actually receive though People aren’t viscerally squicked out by it in the same way

It's quite possible that in some parts of the Red Tribe being gay is considered worse than being poly, but I don't think Westboro rednecks are reading DF's substack. And in many other places, as Aella notes, poly people get the sort of hate gays got a generation or two ago.

Wait for real??? Two generations ago you had to keep your gay relationship under wraps or you’d lose your job and face threats, violence, and ostracism and people actually carried these threats out and murdered people Gay people were associated with child molestors

i know closeted poly folks that absolutely would lose their job if they were outed ostracism, yup associating poly with child molestation, also, yup, that's definitely a thing

"i cannot believe the experiences of the outgroup! it can't be that bad!" is a pattern i see so often and in so many contexts i don't doubt that there's a lot of histrionics and whining but, honestly, as a bi poly man, the "poly" bit is absolutely the scarier thing

I wonder also how much of “we hate gay people more than poly people, we hate them both, but we’re not allowed to express that hate toward gay people” is playing in

Imo gay is an easier update. I used to be very anti-gay but the shift to "oh it's the same relationship, just different gender" is relatively easy compared to ppls feelings about poly - no matter how you imagine it they can't get over the intense jealousy and horror

There's very little in them to relate to when trying to empathize with polyamory, so they don't, whereas with gay ppl it's a bit if a smaller mental step out of bigotry

from what I’ve seen, “gay people are just as normal and boring as us” has been the most successful tactic I haven’t yet seen something equally effective for poly
