Uhhh idk? Lots of parents are equally as horrified that their child might be dating someone who's openly married as they would be finding out their kid is gay. Also gay ppl have the right to marry now, poly people do not. Also no poly representation in media, also

iirc rates of gay acceptance in the us is way higher than poly acceptance. I personally feel significantly less safe as a poly person than I do as a bisexual

I think, for most of the straight people I encounter in my life (& I have the privilege to live in a fairly left-wing city) it’s very easy for them to empathise w someone being attracted to and/or in love w someone of the same sex - they can transpose the feelings they have for-

the opposite sex onto those of the same sex, and see that that is all that’s different. But for people on the opposite end of the sociosexuality spectrum and/or jealousy vs comparison it is so much harder to understand how people could be ok w non monagamy or how that works

Right, ppl think poly people are sociopaths, or don't care about their partners, or only want freewheeling sex. They can't imagine there's actual genuine love and commitment from empathetic humans there.
