I distrust a lot of pay gap stuff. Was there similarly lower payment for white men? Are there other explanations besides racism? Was coinbase actually paying different wages for ppl with the same job level, responsibility and experience?

Yeah, this second report is actually based on data across most of the company’s employees, which indicates disparities in pay between women:men and black:white employees (for the year 2018).

Yeah, agreed—the framing in Coindesk isn’t as clear as it could be. Here’s a graph from the original NYT report that includes the methodology, including that it was specifically within Coinbase.

Nyt is paywalles; I've read a lot on the pay gap and there's a lot of cofounders I'd wanna check before I accept this. If none of those cofounders seem likely here then I'd be prepared to update here
