This is extremely true in my experience too And often I have a sense that something is going to be big, but it takes years to know to what extent it ends up being true

The inverse also happens: moments that seem huge but actually don't matter that much For example, any time you have to walk on stage in front of more than 50 people

Reminds me of the contrast between the stereotypical western attitude of “Make it happen” vs. the message of the Tao Te Ching of “Let it happen.”
-
And by “let it happen” I don’t mean inaction or passivity but rather more of a “go with the flow” approach rather than applying force head-on against conflicting conditions, which is my understanding of a/the key message of the Tao Te Ching.

Yeah, because merely existing in this world as a conscious thinking being is basically the most amazing thing we will ever experience. :D Nothing in the neoliberal economic model of what is valuable and not valuable can match it. :D Just being human is the most interesting part.

I've noticed the same thing looking at things that became legendarily 'cool'. Most of the time, those involved say something like, 'we were just doing something for ourselves, didn't feel like anything at the time' The idea you should be aware of it at the time is a cruel trick

most of the greatest pop songs were written in like, 10 minutes on the way to the recording studio and no one thought they’d be anything while they were doing it. “that’s me in the corner. that’s me in the kitchen, swearing at my dinner” was the original lyrics for the REM song
