Do you mean studied formally or are you including self-study?

Not sure. I think likely academic study of philosophy is outright bad and fails to teach people how to think. They are bad at writing, bad at communicating, bad at having original thoughts. Fantastic at quoting famous dead people though!

So formal study of philosophy discourages original thought. What commonalities, if any, do you find to be positively correlated with original thought?

I don't know! High iq, good self reflection, freedom/unusual self-oriented pursuits maybe?
