My philosophical conversations tend to get worse proportional to the amount my conversational partner has studied philosophy

So formal study of philosophy discourages original thought. What commonalities, if any, do you find to be positively correlated with original thought?

I don't know! High iq, good self reflection, freedom/unusual self-oriented pursuits maybe?

I remember going to philosophy club meetings before and being highly disappointed. My attitude coming in was that we could come up with new ideas and maybe even solve some problems.

Instead, it felt more like a Bible study. It focused on interpreting what exactly philosophers' texts (which were often poorly written IMO) even meant (and not deeper implications so much),

I don't have any formal philosophical education, but I find studying the classics strengthens my own logic, where its not loosy-goosy and all pontification. Learning how to maintain objectivity of the real world is also helpful in being logical and rational.
