Dominance is dangerous in that it escalates conflict. If you're likely to lose the escalation it's not safe to adopt the posture.

I suspect men and women, on average, have different definitions of "submission" and "dominance"

The former is more socially acceptable, potentially less toxic for others as a trait capable of going awry; the latter has been more strongly discouraged over time (at least in the west); gender equality militates against both but the latter is more difficult to possess covertly
