This thread features so many examples of classic emotional abuse, it makes me wonder to what degree the people supporting this stuff are emotionally abusive in their personal lives as well.

Exactly right. It plays into very powerful channels of guilt, status, and tribe. They are using methods of emotional manipulation to achieve political goals—and, in this case, using taxpayer funds to subsidize it at every step.

Many of them, almost certainly. To the degree I’ve dealt with this professionally, I find they fall so neatly into a specific personality. Self-righteous bullies, but with a palpable lack of self-confidence that is a bit sad. Luckily, you can spot it a mile away and run.

In the 1980s during McMartin daycare scandal, there were several women in my community who lost their children because of the cruelty of 1 social worker who saw "occult" in everything. Soon others joined the craze & Moms were accused of unfounded atrocities. Lives ruined forever.
