Exactly right. It plays into very powerful channels of guilt, status, and tribe. They are using methods of emotional manipulation to achieve political goals—and, in this case, using taxpayer funds to subsidize it at every step.

Some groups in Seattle may see themselves as progressive but in the larger scheme of things is it all some weird social experiment that is going out of control?

It is actually not weird or an experiment. It's tribalism. It's got a Maoist edge to it, but it ultimately leverages the same tendencies that allow consensus-based societies to function. It's just that forming such a society at scale in under twenty years is unbelievably brutal.

Many of them, almost certainly. To the degree I’ve dealt with this professionally, I find they fall so neatly into a specific personality. Self-righteous bullies, but with a palpable lack of self-confidence that is a bit sad. Luckily, you can spot it a mile away and run.
