I grew up low class, and expected my life to be hard - only I didn’t process it as “hard”; it was just how life *was.* I was going to have to spend the rest of my life doing minimum-wage physically-hard labor, and then getting pregnant. That was the plan, but more importantly-

Im currently grappling with the “it’s how it is” mentality. Gratitude is helpful for dealing with anything difficult, but accepting less than optimal situations as they are and believing it’s all they can be is toxic. You’ll stay where you are with less than you deserve.

People that talk too much about gratitude either have never experienced true pain or have already been corrupted by it. People overestimate the value of material wealth when extrapolated from the social landscape.
