It does not withhold, you have to pay taxes as well as a 15% self employment tax that you need to set aside with every paycheck.

Thank you for that, it sounds like they do at least (likely) prevent performers from getting a massive tax bill after their earnings are spent?
I sincerely worry when young people like 18 yo do gig work or self employment without guidance

no they don't prevent anything. they just pay you, you're on your own, and they don't even tell you you need to set aside money.
I've seen a lot of girls thinking that the 20% fee is for taxes, and don't put aside anything
