Ok I'm late to the party but yeah I think it does actually seem like men are overconfident and more aggressive in conversation than women. For a long time I wasn't sure if it was just selection bias or being primed or something.

Mostly this comes after seeing a lot of men in CH very confidently say things that I think with a lot less confidence, and I'm like ??? I could have just said my thought louder and with less upward inflection and people would have listened to me more??

Totally true and testosterone-linked. Transmen point out personality shifts after being on T for a while, including heightened aggression

You probably never truly meet shy men who heard that women prefer confident men.

In your experience, would it be possible for a part of this to be explained by a higher variance in this trait in men?

Sexism aside, from my perspective it seems to be mostly different social expectations clashing. I can't speak to how it is for women but for young boys we were generally encouraged to be loud and boisterous so yelling over each other was just how we communicated.
