On one hand, it's good to listen to and make space for someone's pain. On the other hand, if someone's expression of pain is hurting you, it's okay to have boundaries and refuse to endure it. For example:

Hmm. Interesting. So how do you suppose the folk from the injured racial group should respond to their distress? Do you feel they owe civility to these other people?

“these other people”? If one of the other you’re using skin colour to “other” didn’t cause you any distress personally why wouldn’t you be civil to them? Are you advocating people should be divided by skin colour and should be uncivil to each other as a standard?
