How the hell do people stay productive? My brain occasionally and randomly just decides to stop giving me any motivation to do anything for days to sometimes weeks at a time. Do other ppl with normal lives not have this happen? What is wrong with my brain?

What do you do when you don't do anything for days / weeks? Play video games? Socialise? Read books? Lie in bed?

If you are enjoying it, I think you should indulge in this shamelessly. If you are having fun, it is likely productive even if it doesn't produce tangible output.

Lulie ✈️ @reasonisfun'Self discipline' is a patch for being conflicted about what you want to do. Often, productive people are interpreted as 'having discipline': able to force themselves to do the work even when it's unpleasant. But creative productivity only ever works in *spite* of that.Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Idk if I agree with it. I'm sure it's good advice sometimes but idk if it really applies to me, and I'm wary of ppl overapplying that frame

I don't believe the problem is overapplying it but misunderstanding it. Self-discipline is a patch to being conflicted, self-indulgence is another patch. Patches are fine temporarily. What you'd want to do ultimately is resolve the conflict.

That is; ask questions like: "Why is it am I not okay with a life of just twitter and chatting with people?" "Why are my personal projects unappealing to me?" You want to get the best of both worlds! Fun and productivity needn't be enemies.

Right, I understand that, but I think the best frame to explain what's going on with me right now is something something brain chemistry vitamin d. Like ppl keep telling me mental methods but when I take adderall suddenly all my motivation is perfectly resolved? Seems sus.

Like I've already gone through the full processing of coming to terms with not being productive and all that, and when I am productive the cause usually doesn't seem to be alignment as much as concrete environmental or nutritional elements

Yeah, if
@sashintweets’s point is that we should do what sparks joy, it is worth considering that the quality and scale of “what sparks joy” is often contingent on really random factors, and it isn’t necessarily fun to resolve those factors.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
Or, to your point, to even identify what they are.
