So many cults have been popping up in my social circles, among really smart and emotionally mature people I know, what the hell is happening? Have cults always been going on this strong or is there something new in the water?

Right, I do too! And a lot of my friends do and I think this is why we're so susceptible. I think it's possible to have a weird, tight knit community that's not a cult. I described cult dynamics elsewhere in the thread.
