So many cults have been popping up in my social circles, among really smart and emotionally mature people I know, what the hell is happening? Have cults always been going on this strong or is there something new in the water?

They look like quaint, unusual communities run by charismatic leaders with norms different from the regular population, often with really good ideas and inspirational teachings

Cults do not tolerate the questioning of their teachings nor their leaders. Potential new members don't know what they're really getting into. Ex-members are typically shunned by the group to one degree or another. This is all far from harmless.

They look good, they often have very bad effects for the people in them.
This makes cults difficult to distinguish from groups with a genuine grievance.
Are Hong Kong democracy activists willing to be jailed for life for their beliefs part of a cult? Is Greta Thunberg a cult leader, saying that there is no point being in school if there's no future?
