So many cults have been popping up in my social circles, among really smart and emotionally mature people I know, what the hell is happening? Have cults always been going on this strong or is there something new in the water?

They look like quaint, unusual communities run by charismatic leaders with norms different from the regular population, often with really good ideas and inspirational teachings

I've been pretty hesitant to call things cults, as I'm very open and often really love communities that fuck around with norms and look real weird. I'm not using the term lightly here - 3/4 of the cults I know of have ppl who reported getting serious trauma from the experiences

I have often mused about what it would be like to try and start a cult that was just like, "Hello, we are a cult."
I think it would be almost impossible to have a cult that was honest about being a cult, because being a proper cult almost 100% requires denying it.
