So many cults have been popping up in my social circles, among really smart and emotionally mature people I know, what the hell is happening? Have cults always been going on this strong or is there something new in the water?

An unhealthy heirarchy, the belief that they are on an important mission only their techniques are good for, denial of self emotions to conform to the group, distancing from ppl outside the group

Both? I know ppl currently in one cult, I knew ppl in another one before it dissolved and then talked to them about it afterwards. Another cult isn't dissolved but a lot of ppl have left and told me about it, and I knew them back when they were in it too

Do you mean like they're in groups that technically fit these characteristics but aren't commonly considered "cults" or like they're in cults and they know they're cults?

My wife called the military a cult while I was in it. Not so far off from one according to your definition

Does your definition specify group size? Must a cult be small? Or can it include millions?
