I imagine the pervading sense of nothing mattering, our lives as we know it ending, lack of place amongst chaos, makes people gravitate to whatever belief system provides a sense of control and purpose

Scientific backing of possible future global catastrophe makes for an easier "we are here to save the world" pitch that serves as the rally point for many cults. Also in times of uncertainty people are more prone to latch onto something/someone that seems to have answers.
