Hotness is mostly a consequence of believing that you’re hot. It transcends physical attractiveness, which plays a much smaller role than people think.

Different criteria and context for on-screen vs. in-person. Someone with so-so looks but amazing style and personality will be much more attractive in person. On-screen privileges interaction w image, so naturally someone's raw physical attractiveness will weigh more heavily.

Imo the screen distorts/emphasizes entertainment/personality in a very similar way to distorting/emphasizing attractiveness, and if you're less hot in person you're also likely to be less entertaining in person (e.g., see popular youtubers failing live interviews)

Performance/social grace is only one dimension of attractiveness. Passion, competence, je ne sais qua magnetism, many others. I agree that there's a floor, someone deformed will prob always struggle, but psychology of "hotness" is more complex than it appears.
