higher rates of divorce is very sad but it's probably less sad than those marriages continuing

It's kind of like a person being in hospice with a painful disease. Kind of a relief when they are freed of it.
But lets say its a disease caused by [insert cultural and societal elements here]. The ideal scenario is for that never to create the illness in the first place.

Existence of kids in the subject marriage has to confound this binary analysis

It's not good to have a high divorce rate. It means a combination of people trivially entering long term relationship contracts and also giving up on them as soon as they feel like it. It's a sign of little foresight and even less endurance for dealing with problems.

You can't know that. Without the additional stress, those marriages may have been quite happy. I mean... let's say I have a pulley with rolls and rope intended for lifting and moving up to 50kg with ease. I try to lift 500kg with it and it breaks.
Beats it being intact&weak? ;-)

I know of a handful of people that are married because it's more financially untenable to get divorced. Now THATS sad.

There is a non-zero number of those marriages that could be "saved" with therapy and willingness to change, but those may be on the margin
