Amab (assigned male at birth) and afab (assigned female at birth) can be useful descriptors in very particular contexts, but recently I've heard them be used as basically just as a substitution for men and women, and uh, that's just transphobia with extra steps.

You can literally still just say "women" or "men"! Cis women and trans women are women, cis men and trans men are men, and non-binary people are non-binary! Unless you're in very specific and rare conversations or medical contexts, why would a cis person ever use these terms?

I run studies, and categorize enby people in with their birth sex when measuring gender differences. Generally speaking, nonbinary people share gendered traits with their birth sex category.
