if there weren't, many fewer people would do it. a single vote almost never decides an election, so there is basically no individual incentive to vote, as the payoff is almost certainly nil

The only legitimate angle I've ever gotten on the topic is that it's something people in other countries would die for, so we should value it. Most of the time, people disguise it with patriotism or an appeal to civic duty, but really they just want more numbers for their guy.

Personally, I don't think there's such a thing as not voting—only votes you don't like. A vote for no one is a vote *for* no one. You're making your voice heard regardless of what you choose, or refuse to choose. Whether or not that's a smart choice is another thing entirely.
