understanding someone means modeling them. people intuitively grasp that there is an element of contagion to this — that since we run software by altering hardware, to do this is to incorporate a shade of the other into oneself, making connections that are never fully unmade

Tbf what can be killed by the truth, should be. If understanding why someone thinks something makes you think it, then you should think that. This is how I lost my Christian faith.

unfortunately one eventually discovers that "your dopamine regulation capacity" falls into that category, so some jury-rigging winds up called for, but one may still love the sun even if one cannot survive flying too close to it

My life was easier with faith. From a selfish perspective I sometimes think "Would that one could unknow what one knows" – but that's not how minds work, and my knowing might, in some small part at least, make life easier for others if not for me.
