Insight from @BretWeinstein - the appeal of libertarianism in youth today is a direct result of elite failure and terrible governance. Of course the answer is to scale back a system that cannot provide even basic services!

Right, but minimizing coercion at what scale? That is a much deeper question than most libertarians appreciate in my experience. I’m waiting for a 2.0 version of that retains the focus on liberty, but gets sophisticated about the problem of maximizing it.

I think the problem most libertarians see with that is the realization that utopia isn’t an option on offer; the best we can do in the real world is create strong barriers to physical force being used to coerce actions by peaceful people.

The original libertarians were leftists who opposed both the state and private property (and private industry), very close to anarchism. The american definition came from Murray Rothbard, who redefined it as a system with minimal (or no) government, but all property is private.

This is circular tho, as a many libertarians would just a priori define anything a private corporation does as non-coercive.

Corporations are currently colluding with the political Industrial Complex to secure regulations which protect them in their industries. for example, Big pharma keeps the patents eternally from going to generic by using the patent system to their advantage.
