Tradition would be super sad if it stopped at the 1950’s, but there’s something that feels really purposeful about perpetuating ancient rituals, meaningless as they may seem.

I think a lot of people experience modernity as a kind of unhinged exhibitionism of monstrosity and ugliness. A lot of these people do in fact want to stuff things back in the closet on the principle that if they can't see the suffering it's not real.
