The category of things where "this sounds very good and virtuous but in practice is actually hugely destructive" is gigantic and probably responsible for 90% of the shittiness of this culture
Seems the hallmark pattern of choices falling into this category:
failure to really consider 2nd/3rd-order effects (e.g. meritocracy), in favour of immediate/1st order effects (e.g. feelings).
Freedom of choice is one of these things. I'll follow the great Jewish scholar from the 12th century who put a simple twist on Aristotle - Maimonides: Virtue is in the middle - but remember that human nature pulls one side more and hence a counterbalance is advisable.
Equality of outcome is a really dodgy thing to aspire to, but I think she just phrased it poorly. Seems like she’s going for equality of opportunity — everyone gets a chance to grab the rope, then whatever happens from there is up to them.
