Aella added,
'Prop 16 is a constitutional amendment that would repeal Prop 209... discrimination and preferential treatment were prohibited in public employment, public education, and public contracting on account of a person's or group's race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.'"
We know it's confusing. The 1996 ban on affirmative action was deceptively written by a man who doesn’t believe in systemic racism. The ban was supported by David Duke / opposed by Rosa Parks, Dr. King’s family, and all civil rights groups. #Prop16 repeals that ban. #YesOnProp16!
#NoProp16 would have folks believe that this will legalize discrimination. Not true! The truth is California will continue to be protected by strong anti-discrimination laws including the state and federal equal protection clauses, FEHA, and the federal Civil Rights Act.
So why do you need to get rid of this law? So you can start getting people into positions based on race and not merit? This is a *really* tough thing to defend and I'm extraordinarily skeptical.
So affirmative action has existed for 60 years. It's long been about helping integrate our society and very much about helping qualified women and PoC in areas where they've been discriminated and underrepresented. (So women in STEM for example.)
I've always thought affirmative action was racist
