One reason "i don't have the energy to explain this to you, do your own research" bothers me (besides the condescension) is that it implies that if someone does research, they will inevitably come to the same conclusion. They're telling you all the research agrees with them.

They might not know it is not true. Probably someone told them the same thing when they innocently asked the same question a long time ago, and never bothered to check.

At the same time, if I explain side A to someone who believes in side B, there's a very likely case that people will dig their heels into side B, and it may genuinely not be worth my time. It's called the backfire effect. Don't believe me, do your own research.

Since basically 95% of the faculty at college campuses today is left or at least lean left, it's actually too often true. Discussion of any opposing viewpoints is not only rare but actively discouraged.

It's even worse than that. You can go do the research, and they will just tell you that you're looking at "the wrong research"

The problem with the “do your research/homework” crowd is that their research was never turned in and graded. And it shows.

You can tell how well someone understands something by how clearly they can explain it

and the problem is, for every topic, there's 3 resources that all differ on their explanation. couple that with the human mind's filter, the ability of people to actuate and regurgitate what they've learned. the result is a mass of people who dont agree.
