💯 % agreed with this sentiment, and then my experience working across 5 or so labs is that sadly most scientists are no longer pursuing their work because of a love of nature ☹️

It's more about correlation really; not all scientists are bad, but often the system selects for people who want to win the concrete game set out for them - study the thing in the school, get the paper that lets you get the big job, etc.
