My wife (of 12 years) ended up being a good friend of mine from highschool who I had lost contact with for a few years. Just happened to randomly bump into her shortly after a break up (I broke up with someone a few weeks before) and we just hit it off again.

Honestly, it just happens.

Make a list of the things that truly matter, and meet as many ppl as possible who can fit your criteria. If nothing else, it may at least help you refine what those elements should be. Typically we're unaware of our internal biases and don't actually 'want' what we think we do
-
And remember that perfect is the enemy of good. Even the most suitable person for you might have some serious flaws.

This is a massive problem that is related to a lack of face-to-face communities in general. If people had face-to-face communities, maybe kind of like when you're in school, you could get to know people for a long time without the effort and pressure of dating.
-
You would find people automatically from the communities you already participate in on a daily basis, or by branching off of them. "Community Is A Human Right" is an idea I've been trying to push.
