Barrett conflated sexual orientation with sexual preference.
As if who we are attracted to is just a choice we make.

Why would it matter if it were a choice? Why are choices any less meaningful? I don't care if being gay is genetic or a result of a form you carefully fill out, let people love who they want to for any reason, intentional or otherwise, they want.

People who feel threatened by systemic forces grasping at straws to blame specific individuals.

My interpretation: Sexual orientation can also be called sexual preference, but to some people "preference" connotes that the preference is weak and thus implies viability of choice based on non-preference factors. Which is seen as defending sexuality being a choice.

From the Barrett confirmation hearings in some way. Webster's online dictionary apparently changed the definition yesterday after her use of "preference" was deemed offensive. 😆

ACB used the term "sexual preference" and a bunch of people decided that that implied orientation was something we choose. They seem to think that preference == choice, or at least they pretend those are the same to allow for outrage.

ACB used it in hearings. Activists called it anti-LGBT (not a choice), online dictionary changed definition on same day to note it is "offensive".

Amy Barrett used the term yesterday to refer to sexual orientation. She was accused of using an offensive term, and Webster's changed their definition (same day) to say it was an offensive use.

As recently as last month, Webster’s Dictionary included a definition of “preference” as “orientation” or “sexual preference.” TODAY they changed it and added the word “offensive."
Insane - I just checked through Wayback Machine and it’s real.

Supreme Court nominee used it and that phrasing is more commonly used by homophobes who think being LGBT+ is a choice. We know ACB has made speeches to and praised some very homophobic organizations, so people are drawing conclusions about how she will rule on LGBT+ rights cases.

some people think it's offensive. mostly because the unfit woman being installed on the Supreme Court said it.
I think it's ridiculous. I have a preference for women. I didn't control that preference. So I don't think it's really a thing.
They're trying really hard though...
