Why do African immigrants do better in the US than African Americans? I'm trying to find sources for income/educational attainment of immigrants *when they come over*, but am only finding sources of *what they have today*.

Even refugees that make it into western countries (so to speak) tend to be well off to begin with. People without skills and/ or money do not tend to make it out of their region.

I've worked with Cuban refugees and this was not true of them. Those with greater opportunity tended to have more reason to stay, while those with less skills and education tended to be the ones fleeing. Perhaps it's different for African refugees, though.

My parents were not rich or even middle class in Ghana, neither were anyone in their social circle in the states. They came in the 70s.

If you lived in Africa and had a bunch of kids, which child would you choose to send over to America for a college degree? Keep in mind that the financial security of the rest of your family might depend on that decision.

The answer to the rhetorical question is of course "the smartest and/or the most hard working one". You'd have more information about your children to get that right, and more incentive to be honest, than a college admissions department.

I've heard the same arguments about Indian immigrants so I'm inclined to say it's somewhere in the middle - you have to be well off enough to afford applying for a visa and know the immigration process, and poor enough to want to start from scratch again

Also college education that leads to a job is extremely highly valued. It does not appear to be so here
