Why do African immigrants do better in the US than African Americans? I'm trying to find sources for income/educational attainment of immigrants *when they come over*, but am only finding sources of *what they have today*.

It’s largely because only the upper class can afford the flights and immigration fees. And it’s only the first generation immigrants who do better. Their children (unless they embrace their parents’ culture) will be assimilated, specifically into FBA culture.

Do you have a source on the wealth/education of black immigrants when they come over? This seems really key to the discussion and I can't find data on this anywhere. Also, being able to afford that doesn't necessarily mean you're better off than African Americans to start with.

It’s a combination of two factors imo:
1. Those that are able to immigrate are usually educated, well off & usually have in-demand skills.
2. As a foreigner you have to work hard if you want to stay in America & not be forced to go back. Most want to stay. I would if I could.

Do you have a source for #1? I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong, I've just been trying to google the data for that as a definitive answer to this question and can't find very good stuff. Wikipedia has en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_i but it doesn't help much.

i’m going to stick to not overthinking this and say that one group predominantly self-selected and *chose* to come here (whether to escape a horror or to fulfill a dream) and the other group had no effin’ say (from the beginning).

i mean sure but there's a lot of talk about how underprivileged immigrants are and how they have hard lives and in that messaging I don't hear anything about "The immigrants here are self-selecting to fulfill a dream, they'll do better don't worry"

Sowell’s “Discrimination and Disparities” was an enlightening read for me, where he dove deep into this explicitly

I susepct.. looking at the book freakanmoics might give you a clue. An immigrant has none of the.. damages.. and is more likely to be willing to fight around obsticles. That's.. also about immigrants in general.
