as a former extremely intolerant fundamentalist conservative i am really not sympathetic to "don't give [offensive ideology] a platform through debate, they wont change their mind" I would never have changed my mind without the people who were kind to me despite my views.

I was part of an organized group - my family ran a Christian ministry. I also regularly see independent people get banned from forums for voicing opinions, even when they're being super polite.
