This assumes that a) everyone is arguing in good faith, and b) everyone is as discerning and unimpressionable as you. I used to believe the same as you until Trump/COVID/Anti-Mask/Anti-Vaxx crowds proved to me that a significant portion of the population will believe anything.

Who gets to be the moral authority that gets to decide what is it isn't ok to say and believe? What makes this sort of censorship acceptable? People don't have to debate if they don't want to, but debate is the only way to peacefully influence others to change their opinions.

Does everyone but me have a subscription to the Washington Post? I see links shared all the time, which I can't read.

I will keep echoing this sentiment by telling people about Daryl Davis. What he has managed to do is remarkable and a great blueprint for actually changing minds.

This weird notion that people never change their minds seems to say more about the people who believe that than it does about reality. I’ve changed positions on important issues many times.
-
To be charitable: I think it just stems from a misunderstanding about how minds change. You won’t ever see direct evidence of it at the end of a conversation. It happens over time as the result of dozens of interactions. There’s no payoff moment.
