I think this difference is often (though not always) trivial. Lots of people have a strong need to talk about really important and vulnerable things, and the only real outlet they have for this is therapy, under the guise of "this will help you", which makes it less shameful.
Similarly - why did Alan, the multi millionaire from the Louis Theroux Vegas episode believe the casino host was his "friend". Interestingly he now drives an uber, supposedly because he's sold his business and wants to meet/ talk to people:
money = ignorance
The more ignorant I am of how to get what I need freely, naturally, in a healthy way, the more money you can get from me (if I have managed to find someone else ignorant to take it from).
What really boggles me is when people pay more because things are rare... I understand fine design and materials and workmanship - a prada bag is special to hold, so they can demand very high margins multiples of cost to make each duplicate, but a rare stone or stamp ?
