Do you count Scientology as a cult, because I answered assuming it is?

It’s evolutionary biology, both cults & religions impose a tax on their members (time & resources), but only religions lead to members having more children over the long run in spite of that tax; cults end up decreasing the family formation power of their followers

That depends on the church... Westboro Baptist Church is undoubtedly a cult. Evangelical church's are also pretty much a cult. Even Catholicism is debatable.

Westboro is a "church" only in name. It's mostly one family. Sad that so many people have formed negative views of Christianity based on that entirely misleading anecdote.

Cults can be nonreligious. They can be attached to ideas that are tiny in scope. Or a cult thats large, but you only believe in it 40 hrs a week. Being in a relationship can be a cult with two people in it. And even the cult of just one is very possible.

Issac Bonewitts an Arch Druid of several orders created Cult Danger Index on his website before he passed. His wife Phaedra may still have it up.
