How the hell does name popularity work? I hear people say "When I picked that name it wasn't popular, but suddenly everybody started naming their kid that" all the time. I myself have picked at least 3 names for things I thought weren't popular, only to soon realize they were.

This has the cause and effect backward. It's that among all names, one of them happens to be the next fad. It's a mathematical fact that one of the names selected must be most common. And the people who selected that name happened to have selected it.

there dos have to be a most common name but one would think that they are enough names that there doesn't have to be a fad

anticonformists accidentally end up synchronizing themselves, even without explicit coordination-- this applies to hipsters as much as baby nameshttps://arxiv.org/abs/1410.8001

I've discussed this with other parents. A lot of people go with what "sounds good" with minimal thought to it's popularity.

The same names have been in the top 5 each year for about five years now in Belgium, they mention this every year on national news, yet people keep naming their children Arthur over and over again. I just think they don’t mind it’s a popular name! that, or people do 0 research

Just a theory, it's because we have similar backgrounds and you're not trying to come up with a name that is totally unique (random letters or odd symbols or something)
