Sometimes a bid feels upsetting for any number of reasons, typically variations on "you are insecure and using me in an attempt to validate yourself"

Totally. A generalization of this (to me) is when people are making bids for attention that I feel like they don't "deserve" or I in fact don't want to give them - in those cases I turn down bids too.
