Look at me: I've almost 10K followers, but from another era, when I was here in 2007-13. Then I went silent for a while and now most of those flwrs are silent too so my tweets don't get visibility at all. Then I read someone with 500 flwrs that tweets "fart" and gets 50 retweets!
