Why was American slavery so much worse than other forms of slavery throughout history?

Sorry - to clarify, I'm not asking about features of american slavery that were worse, I'm asking about the original causes - why was it that everybody ended up deciding to be worse, where people didn't seem to make those decisions in other places in history?

It played out against the backdrop of the greatest and most impactful leap forward in the recognition of natural rights in history. It was a murder in a gated community instead of a murder in a war zone.

True, but more of a tragic irony than an explanation

It wasn't. The barbary slave trade castrated their men.

American's castrated slaves as a form of punishment, too. I disagree this is worse than breeding slaves to freely enslave generations, splitting families apart & selling or gifting the "stock." There's no conversion chart to compare level of terrible, but this is a bad argument.

When speaking tribal, slaves were often conquered warriors and they could eventually be released. American slavery is at least most recent and more forefront in our minds. I think why it is seen as worse than others is the belief that blacks were livestock basically.

        1. hereditary 2. could not be escaped by, e.g., changing religion 3. manumission was often prohibitively difficult 4. slaves had essentially no legal rights 5. physical distinction between slaver and slave classes that facilitated racism against descendants of freed slaves

And that is basically the same as everywhere else slavery has existed

Was it? That's not snark, I'm just not sure that we know it was. Also, "throughout history" is a lot of time. Also not snark.

I think it was worse? A lot of ancient slaves still had some amount of legal rights or easier routes to freedom.
