I think you just stumbled upon the fact that "self described/identified _____" is typically always going to evoke the same type of scenario. At least in self-conscious people.. their self-identify is reliant on your validation. Yikes.

I'm actually curious to know what a conversation between you and an empath was like. (I'm asking, because what you are describing sounds like a narcissist, and I would like to avoid them, and being one myself.)

My guess is that a self-described empath is more likely to be a narcissist than to be an actual empath.

Most people possess empathy anyway, just for different things and to varying degrees. So it's weird seeing people describe themselves as empaths, as if it's such a unique trait and they're supposed to somehow be special.

Interesting. My wife is def an empath and knows it, but isn't anything like what you describe. I guess she isn't really "self-described" though as it's only something she "learned" as we worked through it.
