This seems like a fairly poor proxy when you could go by randomized/population weighted opinion polling. All advertising shows is that some advertising wonk thinks it will increase sales, which it can do by polarizing and getting a signal boost from controversy.

Also not sure what advertising you're referring to or how you would determine external validity for proxy measures. Is Nike's Colin Capernick campaign really evidence a large number of people support this behavior?
